Celebrating a Successful 2014!

With 2014 on its way out the door, we wanted to say thank you for an amazing year. We have had so much fun experiencing so many wonderful parts of the city with all of you. All in all, we toured 18 amazing new design destinations–from the gorgeous new gardens at the Natural History Museum to The Elsyian and Unique Space. And, to top it all off, we culminated a year of urban discovery and our NEA-supported Making LA series with the Making LA Conference (and our Making LA video!). It’s been one wild ride and we are forever grateful to all of our supporters, speakers and sponsors.

Over the years, our de LaB family has blossomed into a thriving community and we could not have done it without your support. (And if you want to support us with an end-of-year charitable donation, click here!) Otherwise, here’s a look back at everything we did in 2014…

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and New Years. We are looking forward to way lies ahead in 2015. Speaking of which, we’ll have more information about our upcoming visits to The Springs with Design, Bitches in January and Modernism Week in February soon.

Our Making LA conference in the news

Screen Shot 2014-11-20 at 9.33.54 PM

Our Making LA conference was a bigger success than we ever thought possible! Thanks to everyone who came out on that lovely Friday morning to discuss everything from transportation innovation and smart water conservation to community involvement and city density resolutions.

We hope you enjoyed (and learned from) the day as much as we did!

We wanted to share some great articles recapping the day for those of you who made it out and those who couldn’t (a.k.a weren’t able to play design hooky).

The Planning Report, “Evidence That It Takes More Than a Great Idea to Produce Great LA Streets,” story by Melani Smith.

Los Angeles Daily News, “Making LA Conference looks to design a better, wetter city: Opinion,” story by Larry Wilson.

KCRW Design & Architecture, “Find Free Water Anywhere, With New WeTap App,” story by Caroline Chamberlain.

The Nickel, “de LaB’s MakingLA VIP Party,” story by Rachel Garcia.

Neon Tommy, “ ‘Making L.A.’: Designers and Civic Leaders Transforming Los Angeles,” story by Katherine Flynn.

Design Egg, “Making LA Conference,” story by Jess Wickstrom.

Beverly Hills Courier“Creative Leaders Including Moby Convene For Making L.A. Conference at L.A. River Center on Friday,” story by Laura Coleman.

IMLab, “Making LA with de LaB” (covering their lunchtime field trip, a three-mile walk in and around the river and freeways!)

Also be sure to check out photos from the day by Monica Nouwens and Tara Wujcik, photographs from the VIP party at Greenbar Craft Distillery, and stay tuned for recaps on each section and a plan for action in 2015.

Thank you for making Making LA possible!

Take our survey!

We’re listening!

Every year we ask for your ideas, input and advice for how we can make de LaB better.

Take our survey and give us your ideas for what we should feature in the upcoming year. We also want to hear your thoughts on what our Making LA conference should look like.

Thanks for your help! We couldn’t produce the events we do without you!

Check out the survey here.

Thank You for Another Amazing Year! Here’s What We Did in 2013

We’ve already said goodbye to 2013, but wanted to take a few moments to say thank you for all your love and support. This was a pretty big year for us – after becoming a non-profit at the end of 2012 we were awarded our first grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for $20,000 to support our Making LA initiative, which continues into 2014 culminating in our first ever day-long conference! We also continued our schedule of hosting about two events every month, seeking out the most interesting, innovative and inventive design across this great city, going behind-the-scenes at some of our most beloved landmarks including Dodger Stadium, the Magic Castle, and the member-only Los Angeles Athletic Club. We’re so grateful for this community and can’t wait to see what 2014 brings!

Here are some of our favorite people, places and things we saw this year…

  • We started the year with a public art tour of the relatively-new Expo Line train from downtown to Culver City and heard from two of the artists who created the neighborhood-inspired art: Jessica McCoy (Expo/Vermont Station) and Ronald Llanos (Expo/Western Station)
  • In February we headed way east again, to Palm Springs for Modernism Week for a book signing and celebration with Stamberg Aferiatfundraiser for Never Built at a Joshua Tree prefab and a tour of the Hotel Lautner. We also were treated to a tour of the newly-opened Spring Street parklets to hear about these tiny, community-designed parks popping up on city streets.
  • March brought us to two art events, with a curator-led tour of the Vincent Price Art Museum’s Mexicali biennial and tour of the newest incarnation of Night Gallery, led by its architect Peter Zellner and owners Davida Nemeroff and Mieke Marple, who kept some of the original strip mall’s louche intimacy in a much more cavernous space.
  • In April we visited Occidental College’s Solar Array to hear how Lettuce Office turned the ecological installation into public art. We also teamed up with KCRW for a de LaB-curated architecture tour of Culver City.
  • In May we once again hosted a fundraiser for the Neutra VDL House in Silver Lake to see the newly-restored roof, and went behind the scenes to tour Dodger Stadium’s $100 million off-season renovation – locker rooms included!
  • In June we held our fifth (!) annual Design-n-Dim Sum bike ride from Highland Park to Chinatown and as part of the LA Design Week hosted Pecha Kucha night at the Standard Hotel downtown, with ping pong!
  • July gave us access to two spaces normally off-limits to non-members, with a tour of the redesigned Invention Bar at the LA Athletic Club with interior designer Tracy Beckmann and the transformed Phi Sigma Kappa house at USC renovated by Mass Architecture and Design.
  • In August we visited the highly acclaimed Never Built exhibition at the A+D Museum for a curator-led tour with Sam Lubell and Greg Goldin.
  • In September we teamed with Portland-based Hand Eye Supply to host a designer Open Mic Night for a bit of design discussion and group therapy. We also had our inaugural Making LA event, welcoming back the lotuses with a tour of the newly restored Echo Park Lake.
  • In October, lucky de LaBbers got to go behind the scenes at the Magic Castle, which has been restored after a Halloween Night fire in 2011. We also ambled between architecture offices on Hyperion Ave for our first Open Studio Tour fundraiser.
  • In November, we were back to Making LA, this time with a tour of the 28th Street Apartments in South LA – a former Paul Williams-designed YMCA now redone by Koning Eizenberg. We also collaborated with creative collective dublab and food writer Kevin West for a tour of all the changes happening at Grand Central Market downtown.
  • And finally in December architect Ravi GuneWardena led an intimate ikebana workshop at Huge LA and we celebrated the season in style at downtown newcomer Honeycut, with a designer-led tour, a mixology lesson, and cocktails, natch.

And we can’t wait to start planning 2014, starting with a visit to the Deborah Sussman Loves Los Angeles exhibit at WUHO in Hollywood! Stay tuned for details on that and many other exciting events coming this year.

Thank you again for a great 2013!
